Women's basketball upends Husson

GORHAM -- The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team rallied late to down Husson University 79-76 in the USM Tip-Off Tournament consolation game at Warren Hill Gymnasium today.

The Beavers (2-1) are scheduled to host Rivier College Tuesday. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles dropped to 1-2.

Despite holding a 38-37 halftime edge, Farmington fell behind in the second half and trailed 72-65 with 4:45 remaining. Led by five points by Amanda Byrne (Winslow, ME), the Beavers ran off a 10-2 spurt to grab a 75-74 edge with 2:23 left into the game. A pair of Erin Porter (Bangor, ME) free throws with 1:22 left pushed the lead to 77-74, but Husson's Kelsy Lavertu hit a jumper and had a chance at a three-point play with 59 seconds. The Beavers got the rebound on the missed free throw and were able -- with help by a pair of foul shots from Byrne -- to hold on for the win.

Porter (an All-Tournament Team choice) paced the Beavers with a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, ME) supplied 16 points and 10 caroms, Jillian Ross (Belfast, ME) 12 points and Byrne 11 points and eight assists.

Shelby Bradford led Husson with 18 points and 10 rebounds with Jenny Rollins scoring 14 points and Lavertu 12 points.
